    • Dry nice but serious safety concerns

      By NY!en on Thursday, April 08, 2021

      3.0
This is my third Outback. By far tis 2020 model rides the best, handles the best, is the most comfortable and looks the best. The biggest problem is the new 11 inch display, although looks pretty slick, is a serious safety concern. Almost everything that needs to be done is on this display. Iis difficult to find without looking at the display (and not the road). Imagine durning a snow storm and you want to go into xmode (extra bad weather traction), you need to navigate from the home screen to the second level screen and then find the xmode option. This like finding many of the things you need to do is impossible to do safely. Also the options on the screen can be difficult to use. For instance, when you select one of the preset radio stations, the others all disappear and several selections then need to be made to recover them. Again good luck doing this and driving at 55 MPH. Also the quality of this model does not appear to be up to par with past models. I only have 4 thousand miles an already the airbag module failed, the battery had to be replaced, the automatic climate control. is completely inaccurate and the wave to open lift gate only functions sometimes. It is a shame, this Outback has potential to be a 5 star vehicle, but I can only rate at 3 stars
    • Great Upgrade to our 2011 Outback

By WayneB on Friday, May 22, 2020

      5.0
We replaced our 2011 Outback with a 2020 Outback with nearly identical amenities. The 2011 was our first Subaru and proved to be rock-solid for 150,000 miles so we're hoping the same will be true with this one. I'll start with my my negative comments - 1) the Auto Start/Stop is beyond annoying. Takes a minimum of 3 steps to turn off EVERY TIME YOU START THE CAR. Hoping for a software upgrade that at least moves it to the home page; 2) too many features are driven from the center screen (e.g., HVAC, audio...etc.), which can be hard to see in certain light conditions, making it quite dangerous; 3) way to much focus on fuel economy (we purchased another Outback partially because of its frugality, so I don't need numerous indications of MPG, accelerator depression... etc.). Some of the plastic parts in the back are a little cheap feeling, but at least they don't rattle or vibrate (yet). The dash-board glove-box is a joke - really miss the larger one on the 2011. Still getting used to the myriad of electronic features, so I won't pre-judge. Needless to say - read the book. And again. Now for the good - This 2020 Outback is a pleasant improvement over the 2011. Road handling is much improved (very little body roll and better steering response/feel), fuel economy is improved (32 mpg first tank) even with added horsepower. Interior noise is reduced. Seats are very comfortable (I'm 6/1 250 lbs). Finally, car seats for children can be installed without ruining your fingers and hands (not to mention your attitude for the rest of the day). Also, I change my own oil so the placement of the oil filter is a welcome relief (should be no more permanent scars due to burning the skin off my hands).
    • First time Subaru Outback Limited 2.5L owner

Nice job Subaru for building such a beautiful Outback. I must say this 2020 Outback Limited is really a joy, with great ride comfort, roominess front and back, leather seats, moon roof, quiet ride, great responsiveness, excellent 4 wheel traction, just a wonderful wagon mechanically... I’d give it a full 5. I even like its stop/start feature and good mpg, love the Eye Sight features, pre collision warnings, wireless charger, and driver alert functions, haven’t yet tried X-mode. Where it falters (why 4 rather than 5) is in its electronics, sensors assistance that I find faulty, even annoying. Here Subaru needs work to make their use more transparent and intuitive. I like their adaptive cruise, and blind spot, but backup camera poor, cross traffic alert seem weak. Having come from a 2017 Ford Escape Titanium with similar features, I think Ford did a better job in its electronics (not to mention rain sensing wipers, self parking, front and side sensors, none of which I have on my new wagon), though Subaru beats them on design and comfort. Where I found difficulty was in its multifunction 11.6” screen, hard to navigate with multiple layers to find what sought for. Why not consolidate functions rather than having them scattered? I finally was able to track down what I needed in their (four) driver’s manuals, like setting correct volumes for beeps and dings on various sensors (the backup sensor was barely audible per default settings, while navigation prompts and lane centering alerts screamed at me). Nor was it easy to understand what the authors of those manuals had in mind, did they cross-check their indexes? Very hard to find stuff, and then finally when found with little explanation of what function is. So the tech side, though mostly works beautifully, is just badly laid out and difficult to decipher. Otherwise, once you finally are able to make it work right, this Outback is a real joy. I just wished Subaru did better on their manuals, slim them down with simplicity and cross-referencing. (They might want to take a page from Apple or Ford manuals?) So overall only a 4 rating. But if Subaru upgrades those techs, this Outback is definitely a 5!
